PAIN CONDITIONS

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an umbrella term for over 100 conditions affecting the bony joints of the musculoskeletal system and causing painful inflammation of joints and their internal structures. The two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis a common form of arthritis which is often seen with increasing age, is caused by breakdown of cartilage (the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of joints).
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues, starting with the lining of the joints.

Symptoms:

  • Osteoarthritis symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis may begin at a younger age and tends to affect women more frequently. It typically causes painful, warm, swollen joints, and stiffness, often in multiple joints.

While there is no cure for arthritis, treatments are
available to help manage the pain and inflammation associated with it.

What is Post-Herpetic Neuralgia?

Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of. It happens when the herpes zoster virus damages nerves, leading to prolonged pain that may last long after the shingles rash and blisters have healed. PHN pain has been described as burning, stabbing, throbbing, or shooting. PHN may last for months or even years, though most cases improve over time.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent nerve pain in the area where the shingles rash occurred
  • Sensitivity to touch, even from light clothing
  • Less often, PHN can cause an itchy feeling or numbness

What is Diabetic Neuropathy?

Diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can happen with diabetes. Over time, high blood sugar can
injure nerves throughout the body. Diabetic neuropathy most often damages nerves in the legs and feet first, followed by the hands and arms.

Symptoms:

  • Burning or tingling feeling
  • Loss of ability to sense temperature, pressure, or pain
  • Numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Progression from discomfort to numbness as nerve damage increases

While diabetic neuropathy cannot be reversed, managing blood sugar levels and using appropriate treatments can help slow its progression and relieve symptoms.
